When he did not immediately leave the police were called and "Police officers said they determined the use of Tasers was necessary when Tabatabainejad did not do as they asked."

I understand the need to follow the rules, especially, as the article indicated, after 11 for the safety of the students; however, is tasering necessary when he was handcuffed? He doesn't pose a threat when he can't move AND isn't it procedure to check for weapons right after he is handcuffed so they know he isn't dangerous? What if he had a medical condition and the police killed him? Does the punishment fit the crime? I don't think so. Sure, he may have been a problematic patron not having ID, but I am sure the police could have handled it better. Could it have excalated because he was Iranian (which poses other complicated questions)? Who knows, but this is very disturbing. I am in no way proclaiming absolute knowledge of this incident, but what I have read makes me sad.

Video of this incident:

Additional articles:

Cops use stun gun on student who won't show ID

UCLA Community gathers to protest the Taser incident

Student to file suit against UCPD

Beware of easy knee-jerk reactionshollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1163803025529807682006-11-17T14:31:00.000-08:002006-11-17T14:37:05.536-08:00sounds like a personal problem to me...recently i've been gentley urged to go back to school to get my ph.d. i don't know about this...i tried to whole ph.d. program thing and was only accepted into one school (my alma mater). i'm not sure if i should try again. i would love to get my ph.d., but i am not sure about the intense nature of getting a doctorate. and then there is the problem of getting into "the u" (the university of utah, for all those non-utahns).

anyway, that's all. i know, know...poor baby.hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1163639789780530272006-11-15T17:12:00.000-08:002006-11-15T17:18:25.360-08:00letting extreme premies die?i read this article from reuters and was fascinated. should one go to any length to save a premature baby even if it may cause stress on the child itself and may ultimately end in death or terminal problems? the government program doesn't know the religious affliation of the children receiving this toys and--and here's the amusing part--it was said that "kids want a gift for the holiday season that is fun." as a government entity i can understand why those dolls weren't taken, but it is unfortunante that the generousity couldn't have been used...i guess a christian charity might have been a better organization to donate. that being said, who would of thought that jesus would be rejected because, in part, he isn't "fun"?hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1163022530478997272006-11-08T13:42:00.001-08:002006-12-18T16:53:16.043-08:00it's time for a happy dance...last night was a fantastic night. politics is the only thing more exciting/fascinating than trashy tabloid blogs...seriously. anyway, not only did bill ritter become govenor or colorado, but now the u.s. congress is more balanced. rumsfeld also resigned today so today is shaping up to be just as good. i feel that all is well in the universe...now if only barack obama would run for president...hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1161112196272070742006-10-17T11:56:00.000-07:002006-10-17T12:09:56.290-07:00white vs. black loveok, so on cnn.com today the first story you see is A mother or motherland?. this article raises the question whether "intercultural adoptions" are good for children. i think intercultural adoptions are okay, but those making an issue out of ethnicity/race when adopting are exactly the problem with today's society. why does it matter what ethnicity a child is? does it make the parents any less effective or loving? i understand the need to preserve one's heritage (and i think that adoptive parents should make an effort to make this an important part of his/her life), but the difference between one human and another is skin deep. in the article one child says she would "jump at the chance to be adopted by anyone willing to give her a home."

now, the trend of celebrity adoptions are another issue...hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1160525158240078762006-10-10T16:53:00.000-07:002006-10-10T17:06:32.006-07:00massacre versus tragedyi was watching world news tonight and there was a story on school shootings. the story refered to the columbine shootings as the "columbine masssacre." this took me back to my high school days when i went to a school about a half an hour away from columbine high school when those shootings happened. on the local news the shootings were referred to a "tragedy," however in national reports it was called a "massacre." it may just be my narrow perspective, but when violence happens in a certain area, the locals convey the incidents as "tragedies" rather than use harsher words such as "massacre." i wonder what's the difference? is there a difference or is just semantics?hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1159819039918190202006-10-02T12:29:00.000-07:002006-12-18T16:52:36.547-08:00you know what grinds my gears?ok, so here's the deal. i'm on myspace. surprise surprise...everyone is. but what bothers me (grinds my gears) are those who put on their profile: "i'm only on here because i have nothing else to do" or "my friends made me sign up." i thought peer pressure ended at fifth grade, but whatever. they may not *want* to be on this site, but guess what? they are...so that that makes them as lame as they proclaim everyone else on there to be. holier-than-thou attitudes only work when you're not participating in the activity you're criticizing. instead of making other feel like losers by degrading them in the "about me" section, you are really just making yourself look silly.

i actually like networking sites. "but holly," you say, "there are predators on there..." umm...that's why there are privacy settings. you don't have to add everyone who wants to be your friend. you also don't have to seek out people to put on your friends list. i don't befriend people i haven't met in person. i also don't use myspace/facebook/friendster as popularity polls unlike many not-yet-legal kids who have thousands of friends. thousands of friends? wow, really? you are sooo cool especially having half naked wanna be strippers (with fantastic names such as 'DaNCiN LiKe a HO' and 'HOTTNESS 4 U') posting "thanks for the add" on your comment wall.

here is a funny take on networking sites from the daily show:

ps. can you guess what show i am referencing in my title?hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1159636817220998002006-09-30T10:16:00.000-07:002006-12-16T13:24:34.966-08:00when i think about [jon stewart and stephen colbert] i touch myself (video)instead of reporting someone else's writing and making some serious commentary on it i've decided to post a video made with clips of jon stewart and stephen colbert. it's from youtube and it's set to the song "i touch myself." here is a little silliness to start off the weekend:

hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1159367219097708702006-09-27T07:14:00.000-07:002006-11-15T17:38:27.150-08:00soo...holly isn't an asian name? well, damn...twenty of the "whitest" and "blackest" names? from abcnews.com:

Sept. 21, 2006 — Studies of resumes have found that people with black-sounding names are less likely to get callbacks.

"20/20" put 22 pairs of names to the test, posting identical resumes except for the names at the top.

Watch "20/20" Friday Night at 10

The resumes with the white-sounding names were actually downloaded 17 percent more often by job recruiters than the resumes with black-sounding names.

What are some of those names? what about the "phuc yu's" and the "tu luong's"?

on a serious note, this is a sad sad statement of today's society. i mean, really? is this still happening? shame on us. i dont usually do this because i think it is a bit stupid, but this deserves a big frown-y face --> :-(

hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1159198698604323932006-09-25T08:22:00.000-07:002006-09-29T19:52:26.813-07:00attn: tom brady--good looks don't translate into good football playingthe broncos won yesterday over the patriots 17-7. javon walker actually seems to be doing some good down in denver. this makes me really happy after maurice clarett was a total bomb and walker was a disgruntled ex-packer that was injured at the beginning of the season...shanahan may actually know what he's doing...although, i'm not quite sure about plummer yet, however, denver's seems to do well with qb's with "j" names so we'll see.

i know i's funny that i should have this little rambling about the broncos because i think it is halarious when people talk about their football team as if it was a part of their family. i love sports and have grown up playing/watching sports. i'd watch paint dry if it was considered a sport and nothing else was on. and alas, since moving out of the state i have found that i have a very keen interest in the happenings of my former life.

as an fyi, in colorado three things make people happy: the broncos, chipotle, and beer (preferable beer brewed in colorado). no joke.hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1158433526527191832006-09-16T12:02:00.000-07:002006-09-27T07:13:23.243-07:00you're on notice! yeah, you...thanks to this nice little "on notice board" generator i can put whomever i want on notice...unfortunantely i can't put who ever i want on it since some people may read this and be offended.

anyway, who does uranus think it is strutting around like it's cooler than pluto with it's "planet" status?

ps. i love stephen colbert.hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1158377182224989112006-09-15T20:23:00.000-07:002006-09-15T20:32:45.630-07:00w.e.i.r.d.there was an explosion at the salt lake city public library (main branch). i don't think anyone was hurt, which is good. people do crazy things at the library. today a guy tried to steal a small paperback book from our library that was probably less than $3.

on a sillier note, i saw this on a local new station's website. it's called "a tribute to utah" and it pokes fun at the names of the state. i don't know if it's cute funny or just plain crazy. mostly it's just utahns perpetuating the stereotype that utah is weird. yeah....judge for yourself...

hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34244410.post-1158194150276367382006-09-13T17:26:00.000-07:002006-09-13T17:35:50.283-07:00a child for every day of the weektoday i was working and talked with a lady and her children. nothing new working in the library, right? unless you counted the children (seven to be exact). my mind couldn't fatham the thought of having seven children because...well...just because. it reminds me of the nursey rhyme "there was an old lady who lived in a shoe..." i wouldn't know what to do with seven kids besides start my own basketball team (my plan would fail miserably because i am 5'0).

anyway, i know people would say, "well, don't you work in utah? itsn't that what they do? procreate?" well, not to my knowledge i don't think procreating is high on their "to do" lists in life, but who knows? anyway, that was the highlight of my day.

oh, and i got to read for four hours today it was fantastic.hollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07467007401599246991noreply@blogger.com0
